On this #Tropistories we pay tribute to the Discos Fuentes label in the hands of Foxy Fuzz. Discos Fuentes is a powerhouse record company in Colombia, which holds a special place in the hearts of Colombians and responsible for showcasing Tropical music to the world!! Even tough for Colombians, sometimes it is hard to distinguish between various tropical music rhythms like ‘cumbia,’ ‘porro,’ or ‘paseíto,’ most Colombians associate Discos Fuentes music with cherished family gatherings. The company was founded in 1934 by Antonio Fuentes in Cartagena – Colombia. Antonio was a visionary who bet on the budding music industry. He not only invested in recording, producing, and releasing records but also leveraged the power of radio to promote Colombian music. Discos Fuentes gradually gained recognition and became a cornerstone of Colombian music culture. Antonio Fuentes’ venture expanded to Medellín, where the company settled in 1960. They produced records for renowned artists like Pedro Laza y Sus Pelayeros and La Sonora Dinamita. The release of “14 ‘cañonazos bailables” marked a turning point, compiling tropical music stars and becoming iconic in the Colombian music scene. The label’s golden years spanned from 1960 to the late 1980s, featuring remarkable performers and shaping the Colombian music landscape. Despite Antonio Fuentes’ passing in 1985, Discos Fuentes continues to be synonymous with Colombian music, leaving a lasting legacy both in Colombia and on the international stage.
